It is in this mode that the absence of 60 frames per second is most blamed, since the whole experience is based on the sensation of speed guaranteed by progressive acceleration.
Combat events, as their name suggests, revolve entirely around the destruction of the competing vehicles, regardless of location, time and so on.
The profound difference between the various game modes means that, almost certainly, each player will find their favorite discipline to which they will want to devote much of their time, but unfortunately the particular structure chosen for the career mode forces them to complete every single event to go ahead, with a consequent increase in frustration as things get more difficult, perhaps forcing you to repeat the same test several times in which you are obviously less able also because of the lesser interest it aroused.
The overall design of the tracks generally seems less attentive to the needs of the players, with several zones that can completely stop the racing of the vehicles.
An equally bizarre structure has also been chosen by the programmers for the online multiplayer, which instead of allowing you to set the type of event and the track on which you want to compete at will, immediately throws the player into the fray by changing the objective at each game. Once it can happen to be launched into a race with the sole objective of eliminating a rival promptly reported, or to cross the finish line within a certain position.
This, according to the programmers, was done to make online interaction faster and more intuitive, cutting waiting times in lobbies and ensuring the smooth experience that one would expect from a portable console. The speech makes sense and also works quite well, guaranteeing minimal waits between one online match and another, but it is really a shame that this absence of options also affects ad-hoc multiplayer, forcing you to adapt to the experience proposed by the game even when organizing pleasant sessions in the company of a friend.
As expected, WipEout boasts a number of unique features designed to take advantage of the peculiarities of the new Sony hardware. The most evident is that linked to one of the possible control systems, which in practice allows you to accelerate simply by holding a finger on the rear touch pad and to turn by tilting the console.
These are decidedly atypical controls for the series, with which it is necessary to practice a lot before finding the right sensitivity, but it is still a pleasant and interesting experiment.
